A brazen bandit dressed in black, who robbed A&R Cosmetics on Dageraad Avenue, Linden of cash and jewellery in broad daylight, then had the presence of mind to discard the black jersey and cap, and substitute same with a white jersey and cap was still eluding police up to late last night in the mining town.
His actions recalled memories of a similar robbery, about the same time on Monday when prominent businessman Albert “Bolo” Joseph, was shot.
Joseph succumbed to his wounds yesterday.
According to reports the ‘black clothes’ bandit entered the store, shortly before 17:00 hrs, yesterday, and demanded a gold chain from one of the staff, then proceeded behind the counter, where he helped himself to the proceeds of the day’s sale.
Eyewitnesses said that the man then ran toward Mora Street, then unto Co-op Crescent, where he disappeared in the vicinity of the PNC Office.
Police soon after converged on Co-op Crescent and fired some warning shots at the building.
But there was no sign of the bandit; only a vagrant, known as Killa, who was resting in the building emerged, and rebuked the police for shooting “indiscriminately.”
The police later entered the building and searched in vain for the bandit.
They later staked out the entire area, and searched several businesses in the vicinity of Celebrity Avenue, but came up empty handed.
Meanwhile an eyewitness to the robbery said that the bandit stopped and spoke briefly to a known character, before making good his escape.
Another businessman down the street tried to grab the man, as he passed, another eyewitness said, but the man eluded him.
Meanwhile owner of the building which houses the A@R store, Ivor Leacock, and who is the proprietor of the S&J Cambio, which is right next door, said that he was outside his business, when he heard somebody shout “thief”
Leacock, along with other public spirited citizens, then chased after the man down the streets, when the bandit disappeared in the vicinity of Co-op Crescent and Celebrity Avenue.
