Head Coach believes Guyana will advance to finals
Training ahead of what is being considered the most crucial matches the National Under-20’s are set to play in Suriname later this month, began yesterday at the Bayrock Ground, Linden under Head Coach Collie Hercules.
The young Guyanese are preparing to challenge the host nation, Bermuda and the Netherlands Antilles (January 19-23) for the final berth available to the CONCACAF finals (April 3-17) which will see twelve (12) nations battling for four available spots to the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia July 20-August 20.
Hercules told Kaieteur Sport that training got off to a very encouraging start with the levels of the players’ fitness being assessed.
“The players were given programmes to work with while they were away so the Technical staff needed to evaluate where they are at so we can structure the rest of the training programme around that. We do not have too much time on our hands so we’ll need to work hard and be focused ahead of these crucial matches.”
The Head Coach noted that during the remaining days leading up to their first match against Bermuda on January 19 at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo, focus will be on organising defensively.
Hercules stated that during the first round matches which were hosted at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence where Jamaica emerged as the Group winners, he had observed some areas that need attention and they will be aiming to correct those during the camp.
“I am happy with this talented group of players that we have put together and am confident that we will win this group and qualify for the CONCACAF finals. We will be working to get the best out of these boys.”
A number of the players were playing competitive during the just concluded Kashif & Shanghai knock-out football competition while some others were also part of the FC Santa Rosa (Trinidad and Tobago) organised trials hosted by US Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City, formerly Kansas City Wizards in early December.
Meanwhile, the overseas players are expected to start arriving later today while Kevin Beaton USA), who played the opening round matches in Guyana will join the team in Suriname.
