Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News dated Wednesday, December 22, 2010, carried a letter under the caption “There’s a lot wrong with NIS”.
The National Insurance Scheme noted Mr. Mervin’s concerns and would like to offer clarity in the following areas:-
Customer Service
This is an area that is of utmost importance to the Scheme and has overtime seen the implementation of several new systems so as to enhance the service we provide. Ongoing Customer Relations training is part of this process.
Additionally, it is important to point out that a Customer Relations Unit was established at Brickdam along with several Customer Help Desks at the various local offices to further enhance this service.
Contribution Statement
Reference to the issuing contribution statements; please be informed that since 2006 the National Insurance Scheme has been providing yearly contribution statements to employees via their employers.
The purpose for issuing such statements is to allow employees to identify any error or discrepancy, with the view of having same rectified.
The updating of contributions is an ongoing process, which forms part of each of the local offices’ list of duties.
Additionally, the system is of such, that, whatever information is entered on the database can be viewed at any location i.e. any of its branches.
This simply means that the server in Georgetown, at Head Office can be accessed by all of the local offices and likewise Head Office has access to all of its branches.
The absence of information on our computer system does not mean that it is not at NIS.
However, due to several factors, the information may not have been updated on the system.
Pensions
On the issue regarding Old Age Pension, NIS wishes to advise the writer that our Old Age Benefit is payable from age 60 years to eligible contributors.
In order for one to qualify for a pension, such a person must have a minimum of 750 contributions. Any amount below the stipulated number of contributions (and not less than 50 contributions) will guarantee the payment of an Old Age Grant which is a one time payment.
Contrary to the advice given, an insured person does not have to be residing in Guyana to enjoy an Old Age Benefit. The eligible contributor can send a notorized application and documents from overseas and can also nominate a Bank to act on his or her behalf.
In recent times, many overseas based Guyanese have submitted applications for their Old Age Benefits.
It is important to emphasise here, that whatever benefits are due to our overseas-based contributors will be made available to them once an application is made.
The National Insurance Scheme has an open door and is willing to engage anyone who needs additional information regarding this issue.
