A nurse sustained injuries to her face and leg, when a city-bound ambulance from New Amsterdam collided with a car at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
The nurse, Ingrid Roberts, one of her colleagues, the driver of the ambulance, and two female patients were on board at the time.
The accident occurred around 11:45 hours at the traffic light on the Ogle Public Road.
The driver of the ambulance, Danny Narine, told this newspaper that he was on his way to the Georgetown Public Hospital with a maternity patient and a female medical patient when the incident occurred. According to Narine, as he was approaching the traffic light he “had the green” and his siren was on when the driver of the car, despite seeing a red light at his end, proceeded to cross the road.
“We got on the siren and we get the right of way, but all I see is this car speeding across the road in front ah we, and it was too late for me to apply the brakes.”
The man said as soon as both vehicles came to a halt, he began making calls for assistance in getting the patients to the hospital.
Nurse Roberts sustained injuries to her nose. She was bleeding from the injury.
The visibly shaken woman, who appeared to be in immense pain, said the incident happened so fast that she couldn’t recall what really transpired. Roberts also complained about a pain in her leg.
She would only say was that she and a colleague were heading to the city with two patients who needed urgent treatment.
Meanwhile, shortly after the incident, an ambulance from the Davis Memorial Hospital arrived on the scene and its occupants hurriedly rendered assistance to the two patients who were eventually transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The matter has been reported and investigations are ongoing.
This newspaper was told that the driver of the car was detained to assist police in this regard. At the scene, he declined to give his side of the story.
