Over the past few weeks, several government-run internet websites have been infiltrated by hackers, and despite efforts by the Police Force to track the perpetrators, the attacks continue.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) website is the latest victim, and this is the third such attack.
Persons currently visiting the website www.gina.gov.gy are greeted with an image of an eye along with a message, “Hacked by PhaNtom_clAn Gy.”
An Information Technology (IT) specialist has since been flown in and has commenced an attempt to track the source of the malicious content.
Whoever hacked the site is currently deleting information from the website as well as sending out jokes and threats to persons as well as making pranks.
On Wednesday, last, a malicious drawing portraying a well-known government critic was sent out from the site and the entity subsequently issued a statement saying that they were not responsible for it and that they had been hacked.
GINA subsequently stated, “Over the past few months many attempts have been made to hack the website. On one occasion, these attacks led to the website being inaccessible.”
The agency says it views the efforts by the hackers as mischievous with intentions to bring the agency into disrepute.
“GINA will continue to make every effort to improve the security of the site and has lodged a formal complaint with the Commissioner of Police”, the release said.
Last December, Information Liaison to the President, Kwame McCoy, had confirmed that the eprocure.gov.gy website where the government posts its advertisements and notices had been hacked and had been down for several days. According to McCoy, their IT specialists successfully addressed the issue.
Several Government websites have been hacked in recent days, including the website dedicated to the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).
When the LCDS website was hacked, upon access to the site it was playing Islamic music, the website www.lcds.gov.gy scrolled the words “Saudi Arabia Hackers” and “hacked by Net Devil.”
Up to press time yesterday, the GINA site remained infiltrated.
