The jollification of the joyous season has abated and Guyanese are once again settling down to their regular routine. The many sports fraternities are in the process of mapping out their respective itineraries for the fiscal year even as the respective executive bodies anticipate a successful year.
The executive of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) were hard at work, even during the festive season, plotting and planning, as they anticipated the resumption of the monthly ProAm boxing extravaganza. Negotiations with the various principals are now completed and the inaugural card for this year is scheduled to get underway on Friday January 28.
Towards this end, the eight boxers that will comprise the four bouts are scheduled to convene at the Avenue of the Republic offices of Abdool and Abdools to place their Johnny Hancocks on the dotted line as organizers have managed to put together a card that promises excitement from the first gong to the last.
Kurt Best, still on a high after defeating local heavyweight champion, Mitchell Rogers will be out to enforce his dominance in that division when he matches gloves with Anthony Augustin also in the heavyweight division. Veronica Blackman and Pauline London will go after each other, also in the heavyweight division. Fans that have witnessed these two in action in previous bouts know that they will be well entertained. Winston Pompey is back after dropping a lopsided decision to Rawle Frank.
He will seek redemption at the expense of Edmond DeClou, a mean Lindener who has made quite a name for himself against such fighters as Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones and quite recently, Joel McRae who he handed his first loss.
In the night’s opener, Mark Austin would resume his quest for honours when he comes up against Jermaine King.
The organizers are currently awaiting the list of amateur boxers that will comprise the card.
