“This year, we will be working diligently towards moving further away from the stigma that suggests that the Palms offers no more than a shelter and food for its residents”, said the director of Social Services Whentworth Tanner, in an interview with this publication.
Recently, the Palms opened a facility for the recreational benefits of the residents of the home. At present, the facility is equipped with one 60-inch television, games, and games tables. It could accommodate approximately 60 persons “comfortably”.
However, according to Tanner, the facility will be soon developed into an adequately complete recreational space for residents of the Palms.
The director stated that the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security plans to add a gym and a library/ reading room to the facility.
Tanner said that the building is divided into three rooms, one of which is the games room, another, the library, and the third, the gym.
According to him, the Ministry will be providing reading materials, including magazines and newspapers.
Further, the director said that the gym equipment will be provided by the Government of Guyana.
The equipment will be those that are suitable for the residents of the Palms. According to him, approximately half of the 240 residents are mobile; and, full body exercise for those would be highly beneficial.
Some of the equipment that would be made available includes treadmills and elliptical machines (low impact cordial machine).
Tanner also noted that donations from public spirited citizens and organizations would not be refused.
For those residents who are immobile, the director explained that there is not much that can be done to facilitate recreation for them. However, every ward is endowed with cable television.
Tanner sated that the ministry of social services and the Palms have lots more improvements planned for the institution to ensure that the residents enjoy “their golden years in comfort and relaxation”.
