A $25M school building funded by the Kuwait Zakaat House to the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) was officially commissioned at the Meten-Meer-Zorg West Islamic Academy, West Coast Demerara, yesterday.
In attendance at the event were Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh; President of CIOG Fazeel Ferouz; Chief Executive Officer of the CIOG, Shaikh Moeenul Hack, teachers, students and special invitees.
A minute of silence was also observed to slain teacher Salima Mohamed who worked at the institution, and who was murdered by her estranged husband.
The new building has added facilities such as a staff room and a lunch room, and will accommodate the 300 plus students of the Meten Meer Zorg West Islamic Academy.
According to President of the CIOG Fazeel Ferouz, the House of Kuwait has been supporting many of the orphanage programmes of the CIOG and has been doing other philanthropic works within the organisation.
He said that the project cost $25M and that the students will benefit in the long term from the various investments that are made on behalf of donor agencies.
According to the Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, it is pleasing to note that the private schools are developing around the country since students will be able to access education at various levels.
He said that the Ministry is supporting the expansion that is ongoing at the Meten Meer Zorg West Islamic Academy, since the Ministry wants private schools to expand and grow, and so aid the academic and moral development of students.
Baksh said that CIOG has not been only instilling academic and technical values but also moral values. “The school has potential since students come from as far as Patentia and Parika.”
CEO of CIOG Shaikh Moeenul Hack said that all knowledge that is gained is religious knowledge because it is beneficial to the person. It allows everyone to fulfill his purpose in creation.
He said that education is necessary to develop wisdom and intelligence, and thanks must be given to the creator and the Kuwait Zakaat House that have been magnanimous in their gesture, since many more children in the rural areas will be able to benefit from a proper education.
He said that CIOG has five schools. Meten Meer Zorg West Islamic Academy being the first, is one of the best which is administered by persons with decades in the teaching profession.
