Dear Editor,
President Bharrat Jagdeo will leave office next year, marking the end of about 11 years in the presidency of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
Whatever political views we hold, we must take time out to thank his Excellency for his contribution to our nation. At times we agree and disagree with the policy of the Government, which naturally happens all across the world. However, this must not stop us from being patriotic and thank our leaders.
There is a tendency of singing praises on people when they die, but let us praise and thank them when they are alive and can hear us.
If I recall, our President was very young and in the prime of his youth, when he ascended to the highest office in the land.
The responsibilities were numerous, but he stood up to the challenges and has made his mark; there may be several policies which were made in bad faith, we disagree there were numerous things we think could have be handled better, like good accountability, transparency, crime, security, corruption and social conditions, but this should not stop us from thanking the President for his contribution.
There are thousand of Guyanese who perhaps were victims of neglect and discrimination, under the administration of his Excellency, but only time will tell.
However, as descent human being we must also look at the other side of the picture.
Things were bad, but not all the time, His Excellency has done positive things also and for this we must show our gratuity
If we were to examine the burden that comes with such responsibilities we will learn to appreciate that being a president can rob an individual of many personal freedom, but the oath was to put country above self.
This last year of his presidency will be a defining moment of his tenure in office; no doubt he will reminiscence on the time he spent in this noble office and I guess he will pick up the pieces he left off on having some well deserved leisure.
To you Mr. President, thank you very much for leading our beloved Guyana, may you be blessed in all your future endeavours.
A. Fortune
