Over the past 12 hours, police in Berbice have discovered two bodies, however, in different circumstances.
The body of 60-year-old Herman Emanuel Daniels, called ‘Puri’, of Lot 103 Moore Street, Sheet Anchor, and formerly of Sand Hills, Berbice River, was discovered floating in the river yesterday morning.
Daniels, who worked with businessman David Armogan, as a sailor and watchman on one of the businessman’s tugs, went missing on December 27, after he reported for his usual evening work as a watchman on the tug which was moored at the business entity’s wharf at Sheet Anchor under the Canje Bridge.
According to the man’s wife, Fazeena Daniels, her husband left for work around 06:00 hrs on December 27 and that was the last time she saw him.
After she did not see him return she along with his employers made a missing person report at the Central Police Station.
She said that her husband had been working with the company for the last 14 years.
Following his disappearance she made constant checks with the police. Yesterday, she was at the station when the police collected her and took her to the New Amsterdam stelling wharf where her husband’s body had been taken. Upon seeing the body the woman collapsed.
The police said that they received a call about 10:15 hrs about a body that was found floating in the basin at the mouth of the Berbice River, in the vicinity of the Oldendorff barge.
With the help of personnel from the Oldendorff shipping company the body was retrieved and tied with a rope then brought in to the New Amsterdam stelling— a distance of about two miles. According to the police, due to the decomposed state of the body, the journey took 2 ½ hours.
Businessman David Armogan said that Daniels had worked for two days and on December 27 he reported for duty.
“I would usually have two guards working, one on land and one on the tug.”
He was told that the next morning upon arriving for work his workmen noticed the door of the tug open. Upon checking Daniels was nowhere around.
A report was immediately made. Armogan stated that extensive searches were done by his employees and relatives upon hearing that Daniels was missing.
The body was collected by undertakers from the Arokium funeral parlour.
Meanwhile, earlier, the police at Reliance were called to a dilapidated house at Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje where the remains of Harricharran Kowladat, 53, called Bholanauth, was found by neighbours.
According to reports the man was an alcoholic and lived alone.
