Berbicians are peeved that the current road lighting contract does not include possibly the longest straight road in the Caribbean, the Number Nineteen Highway. The project which began recently is being done in phases: New Amsterdam to Palmyra; Fyrish to Johns Port Mourant; #64 Village to Crabwood Creek.
The first phase is well underway as numerous poles have been planted and light fixtures attached.
The #19 Road has been a location of numerous accidents in the past. In October last, a dozen persons lost their lives on the same roadway. It is also a regular feature for animals from farms in the area, who roam the thoroughfare, especially at nights, proving to be a bugbear for motorists.
While many applauded the government’s venture, a number of drivers have expressed disappointment that the street lighting project did not cover lighting up the #19 Highway. They said that the road is very dark and desolate during the nighttime hours.
Meanwhile, when contacted on the issue, Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha said that he is currently making representation to the government for road lighting to be extended to the #19 Highway. He said that the works are being done in phases, and also revealed that he is making representation on behalf of Berbicians for road lights to be placed along the East and West Canje roads as well. These roads are being resurfaced under a government-IDB works/road programme.
Most of the town of New Amsterdam would also see lights being installed along the roadway. While a few years ago, the Guyana Power & Light Inc (GPL) disconnected several lights in New Amsterdam because the Mayor and Town Council had been lacking in payments, the Regional Chairman stated that the Government of Guyana will be footing the light bills for the road lighting.
