You are the people’s servants, not their masters

Dear Sir/Madam,
Given the recent outburst of the President of Guyana with respect to comments raised by the press, “If they cuss me down, I will cuss them down back”, it is very instructive to read what the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago said in this regard:
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar recently said the media play a very important function in keeping the government in check.
She made the comment during a media luncheon she hosted at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, in which she also handed out hampers to every guest.
In a short address during the event, Persad-Bissessar said Government Ministers cannot get angry when negative reports are carried in the media.
“You are doing your job, you have to keep us on our toes, you have to keep us focused and pointed and so on,” she said.
One would have hoped that after 18 years in Government, the PPP politicians would come to understand that they are the servants, not the masters of the people and that they are answerable to those same people.
Generally, politicians are asked to answer at elections time and are allowed to remain or are voted out based on those answers. Unfortunately in Guyana, with our history of racial voting, the PPP politicians believe that they cannot lose and don’t have to answer to anyone.
Therefore their disregard for comments raised or questions asked.
It is said that the people get the Government they deserve and this is true in Guyana.
If we don’t stand up and challenge the actions of the Jagdeo Government, they will continue do as they please.
