Samuel Whyte
Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford’s four-year old Night Crescendo was in devastating form as it battered the field to win the feature ‘C’ class event when the Rising Sun Turf Club in collaboration with the Central Demerara Lions Club and the Lions Club of Durban Park held a successful one-day fund raising Horserace Meet on Sunday, at Arima Park, West Coast Berbice.
Night Crescendo continues to shine brightly and once again showed that it is one of the horses to beat as it toyed with its opponents before opening up like a Rolls Royce down the homestretch to take the $400,000 up for grabs and the coveted Banks DIH Trophy, which was presented by Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart in the 1400M event.
From the time the horses were sent on their way by starter Fazal Habibulla there was a jostle for the lead as the nine entries battled for the front.
Night Crescendo with jockey Yap ‘Old Boy’ Drepaul raced to the front and held a slight advantage for sometime, but was quickly sucked in as the other horses came in a wave. The proceedings continued that way until the horses hit the home stretch when Night Crescendo was asked to do more by Drepaul and duly obliged, displaying an excellent turn of speed opening a comfortable lead, before cantering home for the win.
The minor places were occupied by Marathon Man, Tropical Passion and Sir Balajie in that order.
Bob’s Fortune of the Sham Chattergoon stable and ridden by Paul Delph went out early and kept a handy lead to hold off a fast finishing Fairy Landing and take top honours in the event for three-year old horses over 1100M. The win was worth $250,000 and the Linden Fung Trophy.
Got to Go and Sky is the Limit did not go anywhere near the front and had their limitations as they occupied the other two spots.
Better than Gold of The Jagdeo stable continued its unbeaten run with another dominating performance in the event for Guyana and West Indies bred two-year old horses.
Ridden by Paul Delph the animal hardly broke a sweat as it cruised to victory in the 1100M event and the $200,000 top prize along with the Hablaw’s Meat Centre trophy.
Tropical Passion of the Muthoo stable controlled the turf in the race for horses classified E and lower.
It was Paul Delph again in the stirrups that ran a well executed race, timing his acceleration to perfection as the animal proved too good for its opponents in the sprint for home, coming from behind to cart off the $160,000 first prize and trophy.
Home Bush Baby, Laura Lee in Flight and Top of The Line were all conquered and finished down the line in the 1100M race.
Super Cat scored its third consecutive victory to take over the reigns as the top two-year old horse bred and born in Guyana. It was another devastating victory for the up and coming animal of the Romel Jagroop General Construction stable of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
The match up between Super cat, Wicked Intention and Royal Salute lived up to expectation as the animals give no quarters and asked for none from the time the left they the starting gates.
However, it was the superb riding of Mark Vossey on board Super Cat that produced an inspiring homestretch run to repel the challenge of its rivals en route to victory and the $150,000 winner’s money and trophy.
Wicket Intentions finished ahead of Royal Salute and Kevin to round out the money.
Pixie Fire of the Singh Stable with Navin on board burned the field in the ‘G’ class event over 1400M and claimed the $140,000 first prize and trophy to win ahead of Prospectors Pride, Maracas Star and Dubai Duchess.
Prospectors Pride of the Jumbo Jet stable ridden by Colin Ross won the ‘H’ class event worth $130,000 from Finishing Touch, Dream Girl and Spread the News in the 1400M race.
Dream Girl of the Singh stable with Drepaul in the saddle was the top horse in the ‘I’ class category ahead of Diplomat, Savion and Extra Heat for the $120,000 first prize over 1400M.
Royal Time of the David stable ridden by Navin produced a regal performance to capture the I3 1100M race from Mona Lisa, Nobody Knows and Water Wave and the $120,000 on offer.
Paul Delph claimed the top jockey trophy compliments of Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall of Bourda Market, while Jumbo Jet stable was adjudged the top stable and they too received trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy stall Bourda market.
The presidents of both Lions clubs Sheron Letlow of the Central Demerara Lions and Sandra Kurtzious of the Durban Park club expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the patrons that came out to support the event, the sponsors and the Organizers, including the Rising Sun Turf Club.
They said that they hope to make it an annul affair and emphasised that the proceeds with go towards helping the clubs in their various charity and community programmes.
Over 70 horses took part in the day’s proceedings which had close to $4M in cash and prizes on offer.
