… Arson attempts at East Coast Dem. schools
Police on East Coast Demerara are working feverishly to determine the motive for the attempted arson on two schools in the district on the second day of the New Year.
So far no one has been held because investigators are still to determine the identities of the suspects.
On Sunday, arsonists first attacked the Enterprise Primary School around 04:00 hours.
That blaze was put out by residents using buckets after an alarm was raised by the security guards on duty at the time. This limited the damage to the interior of the office where the fire started.
And even as the police were still investigating that incident, they received a report around 19:00 the same day that the Annandale Primary School was on fire.
However, quick action by the security guard on duty extinguished the blaze before any damage could have been done.
In both instances, police recovered containers with what they suspect were flammable liquids, which clearly pointed to deliberate attempts to burn the buildings down.
“What is clear is that there was flammable substance at both scenes.
Whoever it was showed clear intent and this is worrying,” Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Gavin Primo told Kaieteur News.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said that while it is still too early to really point fingers, the incidents show clearly that there is some sinister motive by the perpetrators.
Initially, it was felt that the Enterprise arson attempt was sparked by police actions in the community.
There was speculation that persons had responded violently to the police shutting down several music sets that were playing in the village in the wee hours of the morning, following complaints from residents.
But the Crime Chief said that investigations have dispelled this as a motive.
He added that investigators have also ruled out that it involved schoolchildren, given the time the incident occurred.
“It is certainly an issue that is attracting our attention,” the Crime Chief said.
Both Persaud and Primo lamented the fact that the incident occurred despite the presence of security guards at both locations.
“Both schools have security guards and yet this happened,” Primo said.
He assured that the police will step up their vigilance since the actions could trigger similar acts at other locations.
Investigators are also trying to ascertain if the two incidents are linked in any way.
