Senior National Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover has continued to rack up championship wins with victory for the second time as a Coach in the Kashif & Shanghai knock-out tournament, Guyana’s Premier championship.
Dover was all thrilled and in a jubilant mood, and why not, following the triumph of his team over Pele 3-2 at the National Stadium, Providence on New Year’s night in the final.
Dover, who also has the distinction of winning the championship as a player with Beacon back in 1995/1996 when they defeated fellow City side Thomas United 1-0 with the then right wing back {Dover} overlapping to square the ball for the winning goal which was scored by another defender, Sean Jordon, said he is very thrilled to lift the championship again.
He said that when he won in 1995/1996 the team was coached by Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite who is the coach of Pele.
“The win was an excellent one for us and I want to thank God for giving us the health, strength and guidance to accomplish the goal again. My staff has done a fine job and I must compliment them for their support, Coaches Gavin Brown and Bilall Nantambu.”
Dover also complimented President of the Club Odinga Lumumba for his support over the years in molding the club in to the best in Guyana.
“I must also thank my players for their support, commitment, discipline and hard work which have resulted in a wonderful victory for us all. The fans were a major factor in our win and on behalf of the club I would like to say a big thank you to them.”
Commenting on the game, Dover said it was a good tactical and technical showdown between two sides which has a number of experienced players in their respective line ups.
“The difference between the two sides I believe was the fact that Alpha made most of their chances count while Pele did not. But I am satisfied with the performance of both teams and I honestly believe that Guyana ought to be proud of such a riveting game.”
Dover made mention of the fact that this was the first time in his career as a coach that he stood up to instruct his charges for the entire 90 minutes. “ I have never done this before and it started in that tough game we had against Bakewell Topp XX. I have never stood up to coach for entire game.”
