Dear Editor,
I believe I can speak for the lot of us who showed up at the Georgetown seawall, all decked-out and full of energy to welcome 2011, when I say we were vastly disappointed on that night.
Our smiles soon turned upside down when the fireworks came to an abrupt stop after only a couple of minutes. After the radios had blared that we should come out to see the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, I had to ask, was that it? Katy Perry’s ‘firework’ would have been preferable to that oh-so-not spectacular display.
Not only was it short, but it was so spaced out that it slowly deflated our excitement!
My family and I made this an annual outing after we first visited four years ago; as I am sure many others have. Now how do you explain to your kids that there are no more fireworks, when they stayed up and out in the cold for more than an hour waiting to see those ‘magnificent’ bursts of flames in the night sky?
From my position on the wall I saw Buddy’s shooting there fireworks up into the sky, which lasted well over 10 minutes.
Hmm, should the government give permission to someone else to sponsor the welcoming of the New Year?
Or was the lack of fireworks because they decided to leave it all for the welcoming of 2012, to show the makers of the movie ‘2012’ that we Guyanese were still standing on God’s green earth on 01-01-2012?
