Orson Pollydore was refused bail after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charges of attempted murder and escape from lawful custody.
It is alleged that on July 2, last, Pollydore, with the intent to commit murder, set fire to Jamie Daniels. It is also alleged that on July 19, last, the defendant escaped from lawful custody.
Pollydore, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead to the indictable charges.
The court was told that Daniels and the accused were living together in a common law relationship. On the day in question, Pollydore went home and accused Daniels of having an “affair”.
Pollydore became annoyed after an argument ensued and drenched Daniels with kerosene and lit her afire. Subsequently the woman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) where she received medical treatment.
An investigation was conducted by the police, Pollydore was placed in custody and was later charged with the offence. However, he escaped on July 19, last, and was recaptured on December 25, last.
The Magistrate refused bail and ordered the man to make his next court appearance on January 3, 2011.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Keron De Freitas who was charged with attempted murder.
The allegation is that on November 15, last, the defendant with the intent to commit murder, inflicted several stabs on Neodat Persaud.
De Freitas, who like Pollydore was unrepresented by a lawyer, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The court was told that Persaud and his wife were returning home from visiting his mother, when De Freitas came up behind him and dealt him a lash to the head, causing him to fall to the ground.
While Persaud was on the ground, De Freitas stabbed him several times to his body. Subsequently he was taken to the hospital.
The court was further told that while Persaud was in the hospital, De Freitas reportedly committed other offences to Persaud’s wife and mother, but investigations are still on going, hence new charges are not yet made against him.
Again the Magistrate refused bail. De Freitas is to make his next court appearance on January 3, 2011 at the Providence Magistrates’ Court.
