Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond on Tuesday postponed the case of driving without license against political and social activist, Mark Benschop, due to her not being in possession of the case docket.
Benschop will now have to appear in court on January 20, when the Magistrate will hand down her final ruling.
He is being represented by attorneys-at-law Nigel Hughes and Christopher Ram, but unfortunately at yesterday’s hearing, both of his attorneys were absent.
When questioned of his lawyers absence, he told the Magistrate that “they are caught up with something”.
Mark Benschop is charged with allegedly driving motor pick-up GLL 3101 without a licence being in force at the time.
Two traffic officers were called by police prosecutor Phillip Sheriff to testify in the matter.
On November 3, last an arrest warrant was issued for Benschop after he failed to show up for one of his case hearings.
He subsequently made himself available to the court thus Magistrate Chandan-Edmond, withdrew the warrant.
Ram, on that occasion, represented Benschop and gave details why his client was absent from the prior hearing.
Ram explained that he had indicated to the court in October, before Magistrate Chandra Sohan, that his client was scheduled to make an overseas trip and was expected to be out of the country until late December.
Ram said he had requested that the matter be called at a later date. He suggested that it appeared that his intentions were not made known to the magistrate.
