Dec 30, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
In 1992 I was a young high school student, when the results of the General Elections were announced, school was dismissed early due to the chaos and confusion that were erupting in Georgetown, but being young, somewhat naïve and carefree, some friends and I ventured forth to “witness history in the making”. So we began to cycle from Camp Road and Thomas Land to Regent Street to see firsthand what was going on downtown.
We never quite made it to Regent Street, an old former school master of ours, who had retired a few years previous, saw us heading southwards to the chaos and called us over “Boys where do you think you’re going”, he asked, to witness history in the making Sir, was the general response.
Surprisingly he gave a humourless chuckle and remarked, “You boys better head on home, there’s no history to be seen today.
Not quite understanding what he meant we pressed the issue, he further remarked, “I’ve lived through the riots in the 1960’s go home and ask your parents about those times.”
We made an about turn, but in parting he gave us some advice that was the genesis of this letter.
He remarked, “You boys will be writing your literature exam soon, if Animal Farm by George Orwell is not on your syllabus, get a copy and read it, this book will serve you well.”
I must admit, I didn’t get where he was coming from at that time or for quite a few years after, but nevertheless I managed to acquire and read Animal Farm. I can now state unequivocally that the school master knew exactly what he was saying and advising.
Almost 20 years later I consider Guyana an “Animal Farm” .We have our ‘Napoleon’ and numerous spin doctors ‘Squealers’. We have even seen a ‘Snowball’ thrown out of the ruling party (My apologies to the good Barrister).
The rule of law in Guyana is bent and molded to suit the circumstances at hand just like the “Commandments in Animal Farm”; the privileged “Pigs” live a life of luxury, while the rest of the “Farm Animals” are worked to the bone motivated by pipe dreams and visions of a future that may never materialise.
Oh yes Guyana is indeed an “Animal Farm”.
I recently read that literary masterpiece again and I smiled to myself, oh yes, Sir knew exactly what he was saying and what was to come to my beloved country.
