Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry yesterday remanded three men after they appeared before her charged with the offence of robbery under arms.
Their names were provided to the court as Dwayne Samuels, Junior Adolphus and Chatandan Herrilall, all of Essequibo.
According to police prosecutor Stephen Telford, an arrest warrant was issued for another suspect, Dennis Stephen, who police believe was a part of the group that committed robbery under arms.
The three accused, who were unrepresented, pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged that on December 22, last, at Richmond Village, Essequibo Coast, four men forcefully entered the house of Udho Gopaul through a window in the upper story of the building and held the family at gunpoint.
The police are also alleging that one of the four suspects had in their possession a knife which they also used to intimidate their victims.
According to the prosecutor, the men then demanded that Udho and his wife Zorma Gopaul hand over all their jewellery. As a result they became terrified and handed over in excess of $2,238,000 worth of gold jewellery.
After the valuables were handed over, the bandits made good their escape.
The matter was then reported and based on descriptions given by the victims to the investigating ranks, the three men were arrested.
Telford also told the court that Zorma Gopaul sustained chop wounds about her body and had to seek medical attention. He also objected to bail citing the seriousness of the offence.
Bail was refused. The three were remanded to prison until January 4, when the matter will be called again at Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
