Dear Editor
I am more convinced now that the PPP government under Bharrat Jagdeo is fascist and a brutal dictatorship. They have driven fears into the population and the business community where people are afraid to speak out against injustices.
I was shocked to read in the newspapers that an Army Major and his wife and a businessman were charged with treason.
In the early 1980’s, three WPA leaders, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, Dr. Walter Rodney and Dr. Omawale were charged for burning down the Ministry of National Mobilisation building on Camp Street but these individuals were charged with arson and not treason under the Burnham PNC government.
They were eventually freed of the arson charges in the court.
If the Burnham PNC government was as wicked and vindictive as the Jagdeo PPP government, many sugar workers and PPP henchmen would have been charged for treason for burning state property such as the sugar cane fields owned by the State. Burnham did not even pursue these arsonists yet he was given titles by the PPP leaders such as “dictator”, “evil” etc.
What title is Jagdeo entitled to when you look at his track record.
Mark Benschop was charged with treason for partaking in a demonstration and Oliver Hinckson was charged with Sedition for making a speech in public about helping the government tackle the crime problem.
The way things are going with the Jagdeo regime, soon, we will see letter writers and journalists charged for treason.
This writer was warned by a “Big One” not to write letters to the newspapers anymore bad- mouthing the government but I would like to tell this “Big One” who might be reading this letter that I will not be silenced in the face of evil and corruption. No threats will deter me.
How long will the Guyanese people tolerate having their rights and freedom trampled under this government?
