Dear Editor,
I was at the Parika Stelling on December 21st at 09.30hrs. I was in a speedboat destined for Supenaam. Already in the boat were two mothers with a baby each. Another speedboat bearing the licence number 004087 pulled up alongside the boat I was in. The Captain left the engine idling with the fumes coming into my face and more seriously the face of babies. When the Captain was spoken to about the situation, he said it was his turn to load next and he could cut off the engine. Myself and other passengers had to inhale the fumes for about five minutes.
I frequent the Supenaam/Parika Speedboat service and have observed little or no regard for passengers, despite having monitors, who apparently are only concerned about whose turn it is to load next. I have seen a Bowman on one of the boats adamant about collecting his fare at Supenaam before the boat leaves instead of him ensuring all passengers were wearing life jackets.
He was too focused on his money to hear one passenger asking him repeatedly for a life jacket, resulting in the boat leaving the stelling with the passenger still not getting his jacket.
I would have spoken to the monitor at Parika about the first incident, but was afraid of being embarrassed, for I had one experience which resulted in me looking like a fool at Supenaam. The experience I am referring to was that I was in the front seat of a boat, the water was calm and no water came into the boat.
But when I reached Supenaam, I realised the cushion on the seat was wet, wetting my pants and that of the two other passengers in the front seat. I protested about it on the wharf and was yelled at by a man at the stelling who was collecting the fare, and no one sought to listen my concern.
It is very disturbing to note the way passengers are spoken to and treated at both stellings. It appears as though passengers are begging for a drop.
