Jagdeo stable take top honours, as two horses collapse and die
Samuel Whyte
Sabrina Princess of the Kris Jagdeo stable produced a brilliant performance to create a major upset to take the feature ‘B’ class event and the top prize of $1M and the Deo Kharag Memorial Trophy when the Kennard Memorial Turf Club held its annual Boxing Day Meet on Sunday, at Bush Lot Farm Corentyne.
The track made heavy and slow by the rains proved to be difficult for many of the horses to negotiate, but the three- year old animal that has ruled the roost in that division for the year moved up in class to challenge its more seasoned competitors in the grueling 9 furlongs event. Ridden by Paul Delph, Sabrina Princess took advantage of its light weight to beat the field which included top entries such as The Message, Tropical Passion, Annie’s Play mate, Prince Charming, Face the Music, Sweet Revenge and Marathon man.
It was a close battle throughout as the lead exchanged hands constantly as the 12 horses battled for positions.
Into the homestretch The Message out of The Elcock stable with Jamaican Andron Findley on its perch enjoyed the lead, but as they approached the finish line, there came Sabrina Princess with a storming run in the heavy conditions to get home ahead of the Message. Tropical Passion and Face the Music were the others that soaked up to the pressure and ended in the placing.
Two animals collapsed and died immediately after race. Defending champion Annie’s Play Mate and Sweet Revenge were those that succumbed.
Fairy Landing of the Sheriff Stable with Daniel Flores in the saddle landed safely in the 9 Furlong event as it secured the $400,000 and the DDL trophy to score a controversial win in a tight finish from Peaceful of the Elcock stable.
The contentious result once again emphasized the need for technology to judge the outcome of such close finishes. Got to GO and Celebration Time rounded out the money.
It was a royal day for Connections of the Jagdeo stable as Fresh Prospect brilliantly ridden by Delph down the homestretch successfully negotiated the conditions, showing its opponents a fresh pair of heels in winning the F class Event and the $250,000 top prize over 6 furlongs. Laura Lee in Flight, Home Bush Baby and Sweet Revenge were the others that placed.
Super Cat of the Romel Jagmohan Stable and ridden by Mark Vossey was in devastating form as it sped away for a gate to pole victory in the Digicel sponsored two year old event for Guyana Bred horses and claimed the $200,000 top prize and Digicel trophy ahead of Royal Salute, Wicked Intentions and Water Wave.
Sir Balagee with Chandra on Board won the G class $200,000 first prize and trophy in the 6F event ahead of South Sea, Pixie Fire and Gabriel’s Gold.
Funny Side of the Gray stable with Findley in control took care of the’ I’ class 7F event and the $150,000 winners prize .Dream Girl, Sun Razor and Black Beauty finishing in that order.
Extra Heat with Findley on its back burned up it rivals to win the I3 maiden and J and lower 6F class race to win the $120,000 first prize.
Beyonce of the Williams Stable and ridden by Yap Drepaul danced away from its opponents to take the $110, 000 top prize in the K and lower 6F race.
The top Jockey on show was Jamaican Andron Findley, with Paul Delph being the runner up, while the top stable was the Jagdeo stable.
They all received trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall Bourda market.
The next race meet is set for Sunday, 2nd January at The Rising Sun Turf Club.
