Dear Editor,
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is no longer an independent institution. Under the present Commissioner Henry Greene, supported by a number of senior officers, who form the top brass of the force, this once proud organisation has now degenerated into the strong arm of the Government.
Arrest and detain seem to the instructions laid down by the police to anyone offering dissent.
They have no regard for the law as it pertains to petty offences, as decent citizens are detained and placed in the dirty Brickdam Lockups, sometimes overnight for offences that are misdemeanors and carry bail.
Know drug lords masquerading as businessmen openly break the law without fear of being prosecuted. Because as we are all aware, Money Talks.
The recent fireworks exhibition is a prime example, only after a public outcry was some action taken.
Imagine we have a Commissioner of Police whose visa has been revoked by the US Embassy. Also within the force is a divisional commander with known ties to the ‘Phantom Squad’, he is also alleged to be an active participant in extra judicial killings with the notorious black clothes police, these are the kind of people we have in charge of law and order, what a shame.
What is seen happening with the GPF, the army and many key institutions in Guyana is that absolute loyalty is being bought.
Many of the key players are give house lots, fancy cars and sumptuous allowances, in other words, they are well taken care of, so to hell with justice and the rule of law.
For many of Guyana’s elite the term “Above the Law” is alive and well.
