– victim urges family to pay ransom
Police are said to be looking for an underworld figure known as ‘Fishy’ in connection with Thursday’s kidnapping of 29-year-old Agricola Gail Perreira.
Kaieteur News understands that police have received information which appears to link him to the shipping employee’s abduction.
This newspaper confirmed that ‘Fishy’ was one of the people who police had questioned about the murder of Demerara Bank Ltd. Employee Sheema Mangar, who was run over by a car after a thief snatched her cell phone. Police said that they have released three other persons who were being questioned.
Meanwhile, police have established that Perreira was still alive up to yesterday, since the woman’s kidnappers reportedly allowed her to speak to her relatives.
During the call, Perreira reportedly told a relative that she was alright and urged them to pay the ransom.
However, while investigators have the caller’s telephone number, they have been unable to trace the call.
Perreira of Lot 12, Evan Philips Park, Agricola, was snatched from outside her home while sitting in a taxi at around 20:00 hrs on Thursday.
The kidnappers had initially demanded $20M for her release soon after they kidnapped the woman. However, they then lowered their demand to $10 million.
A police statement said that Perreira went home by taxi and upon her arrival a black Raum motor vehicle drove up and three men, including one with a handgun, exited.
The men stuck up the taxi-driver, placed him to lie on the ground, then abducted Gail Perreira and drove away with her in their vehicle. They also took away the taxi-driver’s car.
Subsequently, the abducted woman’s brother, Roger Perreira, received a call from a man who demanded a ransom of $20 million in exchange for her safe return.
A report was made to the Ruimveldt Police Station. The taxi-driver’s vehicle was recovered on the roadway in front of the West Ruimveldt Primary School.
