Members of the Bartica Speedboat Association are calling on sawmill operators to be more responsible when using the river. President of the body, Clarence Belle, in an interview said that the recent deadly accident could have been avoided if this had been the norm.
He pointed out that speedboat owners ply the Bartica to Parika route on a regular basis and over the years they have been calling on sawmill owners to remove poles that have been planted in the river without proper markings.
“Some boat captains can always remember where these poles are, but not everybody can, and when the tide is high you definitely can’t see the poles,” Belle asserted. He explained that none of the poles that are currently in the river have markings.
He said that since the recent accident which claimed the life of a Brazilian national, a piece of stick was placed on the pole with a salt bag tied to it.
Belle went on to explain that poles are planted along the main channel. The operators are calling on sawmill operators along the river, particularly between Morishi and Parika, to be more considerate.
On Monday, last, a boat was heading to Bartica with about 20 passengers when the aforementioned mishap occurred around 17:50 hours.
According to reports, the captain of the boat missed the normal channel as a result of the spring tide and crashed into one of the poles.
Kaieteur News understands that after hitting the pole, all of the passengers were hurled into the water when the boat capsized.
Except for the Brazilian, all the passengers managed to swim ashore or were rescued by other vessels in the immediate vicinity. The victim’s lifeless body was discovered when the boat was eventually righted.
Meanwhile the driver of the boat has since been released on station bail as investigators say that the man should not be held accountable for the accident.
