His career saw him joining the Ministry of Information as Information Assistant in 1980. He was later appointed Regional Information Officer for East Coast and West Berbice. It was in that capacity that he was transferred to Mahdia, Region Eight, and then to Bartica, Region Seven.
Sobers subsequently joined the staff of the Guyana Electricity Corporation as Public Relations Officer in 1986 before being seconded to the Guyana National Cooperative Bank in 1991 as the P.R.O. for that entity.
He is currently a Reserve Officer in the Guyana Defence Force, having been commissioned in 1988. He now holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career he was awarded the Military Efficiency Medal among others
Sobers gained his secondary education at the West Demerara Secondary School and entered the University of Guyana where he gained a Diploma in Public Communication, graduating as the Best Graduating Student (1985); a Bachelors Degree in Mass Communication (1991); his law degree in 2001 and his Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School in 2003.
Sobers also lectured at Critchlow Labour College and the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education, which is now the UG Centre for Communication Studies.
Sobers is still to be posted, but his appointment has boosted the ranks of magistrates.
