Komalnauth Jagdeo, 32, a taxi driver of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, who was so drunk that the police had to relieve him of the vehicle he was driving and take it to the station, was yesterday fined $7,500 with the alternative of 20 days imprisonment.
The penalty was imposed by Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Court and pleaded guilty.
Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, told the court that on December 17, last, a traffic rank stopped Jagdeo, who was driving a taxi (HB 3097) north along Strand Public Road in New Amsterdam, and requested to see his relevant documents.
It was then that the alert policeman observed that Jagdeo was not in total control of himself and his breath and surroundings reeked of alcohol. He was immediately arrested and taken to the Central Police Station where a breathalyzer test revealed that he had consumed 197 microgrammes of liquor, way above the acceptable limit.
