Orin Joseph of Lot 16 Timehri Docks, East Bank Demerara, was refused bail yesterday, after he made a court appearance to answer to a charge of possession of narcotics.
The man pleaded not guilty to the charge, when it was read by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, last, the defendant had in his possession 808 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He was unrepresented.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford, who objected to bail, told the court that Joseph is a miner in the hinterland. He said that the Custom Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) acted upon information they had received, when they went to the home of the defendant.
Telford stated that CANU ranks identified themselves to Joseph, and were given permission by him to conduct a search in the house.
He added that the illegal substance was unearthed. Subsequently Joseph was told of the offence committed and was charged with the offence.
The magistrate ordered the man to make his next court appearance on January 3, 2011.
