The Police and Army swooped down on the Georgetown Prisons late last night, over reports of a break out by inmates in solitary confinement.
Prison officials were not immediately available for comment, but sources told Kaieteur News that at least two men were removed from the brick prison and taken to another area called the cage.
Sources speculated that there was an attempted break-out by prisoners in solitary confinement. Heavily armed Police and Army barricaded the immediate vicinity of the prisons and residents were told that a Joint Services operation was underway.
Kaieteur News understands that Police and Army conducted extensive searches in the prison.
The Guyana Fire Service was also on stand-by.
