Dear Editor,
The last time I was home I observed that there are a couple of things wrong with what is referred to as ‘our international airport’.
Firstly, it is my belief that we do have competent and intelligent people in my beautiful country.
However, I could not understand the reason for a ‘rusty’ looking chain placed across the entrance of the main departure hall. How could we in this decade be so backward?
Also I don’t understand that, unless you are a travelling passenger, you are not allowed to accompany your family to the check-in counter with their luggage whether it is your old grand mother or pregnant wife/sister/aunt etc.
Secondly, the revised treaty of Chaguaramas was enacted in most of our Caribbean countries. As part of that agreement we have the free movement of nationals from different ports of entry within the region. However, before all the governments agreed to the revised treaty several high level meetings were held to ‘iron out’ what would be ‘glitches’ so as to make things work.
When I was departing my country Guyana on the 25th October, 2010, I completed the bottom portion of the Immigration Form (which is now that long white form that is used in all the jurisdictions).
The Immigration Officer attending to me requested from me, the address to which I was proceeding to and the address from whence I came, in addition, she also requested my occupation.
I informed her that I had answered all the questions on the said form and why was it necessary for me to be asked questions that are not on the said form…obviously, that ticked her off and she said well that is the system.
I cannot believe that we as a nation would have agreed to the use of the one form but upon departing Guyana additional information is required…I think it shows that somebody who signed this agreement relating to the use of the one form was not clear or did not understand what he/she was signing.
I do have a difficulty with this procedure and intend to raise it with the Chief Immigration Officer, as it makes a mockery of our people.
Each other country that I have travelled to in the region, only requires that lower portion of the said form to be completed when departing.
It is time that we have some consistency in these areas of work so that we don’t appear to be ‘a backward’ bunch by the rest of our brothers and sisters in the region.
What is Mr Robeson Benn or the Minister of Home Affairs doing about such?
