A man is currently under police guard at the West Demerara Regional Hospital after he was shot by police, minutes after stabbing his brother to death and attempting to flee.
Reports are that 49-year-old Royston Peters of La Grange Old Road, West Bank Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital sometime around 17:00 hours yesterday. The man was reportedly stabbed to the heart by his brother, Ashton, who was later shot in the left leg after he tried eluding police. He was shot in Bagotville, a village away from where the incident occurred.
The only two persons who reportedly witnessed the attack were the man’s 10-year-old nephew and his 7-year-old niece.
Kaieteur News understands that at around 14:00 hours yesterday, Royston Peters began enquiring from his brother about a tin of paint and a transformer which went missing from his home. The two men lived next door to each other. According to information received, after Royston kept asking for the items, his brother started to curse him.
“Uncle Royston just keep asking he calm about he paint and Ashton just keep cussing…so uncle Royston go over by uncle Ashton and knock on he door,”.
Reports are that after Royston Peters knocked on his brother’s door, his brother came out with what appeared to be an ice pick and stabbed him. According to eyewitnesses, Peters then stumbled back into his house.
“All we see is uncle Royston stumble over de gutter and we just thought it was a scrape he get.”
Sometime after, the wounded man’s niece and nephew decided to go into his house to check on him only to find him lying in a pool of blood.
“After we go upstairs and we see uncle Royston lying down in de blood we start screaming and call neighbours.”
It was only at that point that neighbours were made aware that something was gravely wrong. The man’s two young relatives were escorted back to the house and the police were informed. Ranks from La Grange Station immediately visited the scene. The injured man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Back at La Grange, police swarmed the alleged perpetrator’s house, and he reportedly came out with a cutlass in his hand. The police were in a 20-minute standoff with the man who they pursued to Bagotville where he was shot.
Up to press time yesterday, the suspect was still under police guard.
Meanwhile residents of the community were thrown into deep shock. Many lamented the fact that the assailant was a nuisance to the community and it was his brother who always tried to make peace.
“Rasta man Ashton does thief people thing and Royston always got to go in he house and get back de people thing, but we never know it woulda end like this,” one resident of the community said.
Royston Peters worked as a contractor and as a councilor at the La Grange/Nismes National Democratic Council.
