Lima and Walton Hall will clash in what is expected to be an exiting final of the Caricom Rice Mill twenty/20 cricket competition at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground in North Essequibo.
Both teams recorded victories in their respective semifinal matches played recently at Walton Hall cricket ground.
In the first semifinal Lima got the better of Anna Regina Young Achievers by 64 runs. Lima won the toss and batted first and scored a challenging 154 all out off their 20 overs.
Nimran Bahadur hit two sixes and three fours in a top score of 35 and got valuable support from Rajiv Manichand 32 (5×4) and Subash Maipaul 22 (2×6, 1×4). Kishan Jaikaran was Young Achievers main wicket taker with 3-23 off 4 overs while Rovindra Singh had 2-19 off 4 overs and Rovin Narine 2-21 from 4.
Young Achievers in reply could only muster 90 before they were bowled out in 18 overs.
Tamesh Dhanpaul was their leading run getter with 33 (4×4) while Tillack Lall (11) was the only other batsman that got into double figures as Manichand returned to claim 4-15 off 4 overs and Basil Bissessar took 2-12 off 3.
In the second semifinal, home team Walton Hall overcame Gunners by 5 runs. The host batted first and made 125 all out off their allotted overs. Uvindra Balgobin led with 30 which included two sixes while Navin Bahadur supported with 24 (4×4) and Suraj Sookdeo contributed 20 (3×4).
Offspinner Neilson Gordon bagged 5-20 off 4 overs while Mark Tyrell picked up 2-21 off 4 overs and Greyson Paul 2-21 from 4.
Gunners in their turn at the crease managed 120-9 off their 20 overs. Greyson Paul top scored with 30 (2×6,2×4) while Navin Singh made 25 (3×6) and Keron Sewnarine 18. Offspinner Balgobin captured 4-24 off 4 overs and Suraj Sookdeo claimed 2-22 from 4.
Boxing Day the final as well as the third place play off between Young Achievers and Gunners will be contested.
According to the president of the North Essequibo Cricket committee Prince Holder, the winning and runner-up teams, the best batsman and bowler in the competition, the man-of-the-match in the final and the winner of the third place clash will received trophies and cash incentives.
Holder also told Kaieteur sport that his committee plans to start the NBS 40 over competition shortly and he would like to see more cricket being played in the Cinderella county especially the longer version of the game so that cricketers can be better able to develop. He also stated that while the rain has affected some competitions in the country, Essequibo is not short of talent and calls on the respective board officials to ensure the facilities are up to standard during the cricket season.
He thanked Kaieteur sport for providing coverage for cricket in Essequibo for it serves as a good motivational factor for the youngsters.
