While the relatives of Special Constable Marva McNabb are preparing to bury her remains, the driver of the car that struck her down was left to contemplate how he will spend his Christmas behind bars.
Seodatt Harricharran, 35, of Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Issacs-Marcus at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Harricharran was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to render assistance following an accident on the Coldingen Access Road shortly before midnight on Saturday, which left the Special Constable dead.
On that night, McNabb, of Block 12, Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara, was on her way home after work when she was struck down by a car.
Initially police thought that it was case of murder since there were no signs of an accident, such as broken glass.
Neither were there any visible bruises on McNabb’s body
However, an eyewitness later informed them that the woman was hit by a speeding car, PHH 252.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver of the car that struck down McNabb fled the scene but was pursued by the eyewitness to the accident.
The eyewitness pulled up to him and told him that he had struck down a woman and advised him to go back and render some assistance. But instead of doing so, the driver after returning to the scene, saw the woman lying motionless and decided to drive away.
He first drove to Enmore, a few miles away, before returning home to Coldingen where he was subsequently apprehended by police the following morning.
Harricharran was granted $10,000 bail on the failing to render assistance charge, while he was remanded until January 5 on the causing death by dangerous driving charge.
