Liquid Gold play Sunburst Camptown; Pele oppose Fruta Conquerors
With half the 8 quarterfinal slots already taken, two more will be filled today when action in the 21st Kashif & Shanghai Football Tournament continues with what is expected to be a fierce double header at the GFC Ground, Bourda.
Pele led by the indomitable Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard will come against Fruta Conquerors who were taken to the brink in their first game which they won against East Demerara’s Victoria Kings on penalty kicks at the Enmore Ground last Friday.
The opening game will see the upset package of the tournament to date, Bartica’s Liquid Gold coming up against the experienced Sunburst Camptown. Like Conquerors, Liquid Gold won their opening game via penalty kicks against pre-game favorites Riddim Squad last Wednesday at the GFC Ground.
Pele, who lifted the championship trophy having defeated Sunburst Camptown in the 2008/2009 finals will start this clash with the odds in their favour but will find that Conquerors will be no pushover.
Pollard will have able support with star forward Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson hunting goals up front along with the equally explosive Devon Millington. Shawn Beveney who along with Millington was part of the winning BK International Western Tigers outfit last year is also a part of the Pele lineup.
Former Captain Dirk Archer and Konata Manning are also back for Pele.
Other players in the squad are Under-20 Sheldon Holder, veteran midfielder Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Keoma Gravesande, Devon Edinborogh and former national custodian who now plays in Trinidad and Tobago, Shawn Johnson.
Head Coach Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite in an invited comment said that they will not be taking any team for granted. He stated that they are well prepared and will be taking one game at a time.
Leading Conquerors’ quest for their second win in as many games is T&T based forward Vurlon Mills who scored two of his side’s three regulation time goals against Victoria Kings before the East Coast side rebounded in fine style.
Mills will find able support from Delon Williams, Neville Stanton, Trevon Lythcott, Jolyon Harry, Lumumba Hinds, Lester Peters, Jomo Hinds, Manasseh Primo, Travis Hackett, Gerald Gritten and goalkeeper Colin Edwards among others.
Liquid Gold will no doubt be in high spirits following their win over Riddim Squad but will find a different opposition in Sunburst Camptown who will be led by Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington who is gradually returning to his dominant self up front and Devon Forde who was lethal in the NAMILCO festival.
Seasoned campaigner Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod will take charge of the midfield with support from Orlando Gilgeous, and Sherwin Cadogan taking charge of the defence along with experienced goalkeeping pair of Maurice Prince and Linden Dennis.
Reshawn Sandiford, Lance Rolston, Colin Jones, Adrian Adonis and Jahal Greaves will also add depth to Camptown’s challenge.
Bartica will be aiming to notch up another win which will see them cantering into the quarterfinals. Leading them once again will be Shawn Benn, Handel Norton, Xavier Hendricks, Shawn Garraway, Quacy Jacobs, Cleon Joris and Aloysius Edwards.
Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
