Thirteen persons—nine men and four women — who were charged with possession of explosives and causing public terror, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Eleven of the accused were present in the courtroom when the charges were read and were each placed on $25,000 bail. They were ordered to return to court on January 7, 2011.
The charges resulted from polices’ response to reports received on Sunday, last, that persons who were attending a private party at Buddy’s Night Club, on Sheriff Street, Georgetown, were setting off explosive devices in the compound, which caused fear and panic to neighbouring residents.
Residents, who are in close proximity of the Sheriff Street area, were greeted with what sounded like rapid gunfire early on Sunday morning as party revelers set off a large amount of ‘military type’ fireworks.
The fireworks were set off in front of the Buddy’s Night club some time around 5:00 hours.
According to reports, a popular city businessman was celebrating his birthday at the Buddy’s Night Club when persons attending the event decided to set off the fireworks, sending the entire Kitty/Campbellville area into panic, fearing that they were gunshots.
