Bishoo also included
By Sean Devers
The wait is over for Guyana Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan while Albion leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo has been rewarded for an impressive year for Guyana with a wonderful Christmas gift.
The pair, along with veteran middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul have been named in a West Indies 30-training squad to prepare for next year’s World Cup in Asia.
The 30-year-old Sarwan was denied a central Contract and controversially overlooked for the recent Sri Lanka tour because of ‘fitness’ issues’ although he participated and scored half-centuries in the Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa in September and the Regional 50-over competition last month.
The squad will begin be reduced to 15 after the Regional T20 which concludes in Barbados on January 23 for World Cup which starts on February 19 with the West Indies, who won the first two tournaments (1975 & 1979) before losing to India in the 1983 final playing their opening match in Sri Lanka. India and Bangladesh will also host matches.
The 25-year-old Bishoo, Guyana’s Cricketer of the year, REPRESENTED THE West Indies in the ‘A’ team ODI series against Pakistan ‘A’ last month and is one of three players- Kirk Edwards & Gavin Tonge are the others- from the eight given Development Contracts by the WICB to be included in the 30-member squad.
Former West Indies Vice-Captain Trinidadian Denesh Ramdin is also back while live-wire Leewards’ leg-spinner Anthony Martin and Barbadians Jason Holder and Jonathan Carter have also gets a first-time senior squad call-up.
Pacer Jerome Taylor, who has been named in the Jamaica T20 squad for next months Regional tournament after a long absence due to injury, has not been included while Fidel Edwards who recently returned to club cricket in Barbados also misses out.
West Indies Test Vice-Captain Brendan Nash, the Australian born Jamaican, is the only player with a Central Retainer Contract not included while Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, who have opted to miss the Caribbean Cup to play in Australia’s Big Bash, have predictably been included.
Talented Nevis left-hander Kieran Powell, Holder and Devon Thomas who was a member of the test squad in Sri Lanka, are the players from the Sagicor High Performance Center in the squad. Dominican Off-spinner Shane Shillingford who had problems who was reported for a suspect bowling action during the Sri Lanka Test series, is also in the 30 selected.
The hyper-active Tino Best who demonstrated a vast improvement in his control during the Regional 50- over competition in Jamaica and his Bajan Skipper Ryan Hinds have also gotten the nod of the Clyde Butts-led Selection panel.
