Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital are monitoring the condition of a rape accused who claimed to have ingested a poisonous substance while awaiting his moment before an East Coast Demerara Magistrate.
The man, Elroy Barry, 21, was rushed to the hospital shortly before midday, yesterday, after police at the Cove and John Police Station found a substance they suspect to be poison in his possession.
Barry, of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, is accused of rape, an offence he allegedly committed in September.
Since then, he has been on police station bail as the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions was being sought.
That advice with instructions to charge was issued to the police some time last week and Barry was duly informed.
He was ordered to report to the Cove and John Police Station yesterday with the intention of having him placed before the Magistrate.
Barry duly reported to the station and according to reports, threatened to kill himself.
However, the police did not take the threat seriously and it was not until Barry indicated minutes later that he had ingested poison, that the police reacted.
They carried out a search on Barry and found a bottle containing what they suspected to be poison.
Barry’s condition is listed as stable and he is presently under guard.
