Keeve Allicock (HE) replicated his superb 3-0 victory over Travis Hall on the opening night with a similar win over Benjamin Henry (NWBG) and was duly crowned bantamweight champion when the curtains were drawn on the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association’s (GABA) Champion of Champions boxing tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Sunday evening last.
Allicock’s performance also impressed the committee charged with the selection of the best boxer and those gentlemen eventually voted unanimously to bestow that accolade on the new bantamweight champion.
Eon Bancroft (GDF) failed to replicate his performances on the opening night where he knocked out his gym mate, Rock Watson, surrendering a 3-0 decision to another gym mate, Ron Smith, the new middleweight Champion of Champions king. However, Bancroft regained some pride when he was later adjudged the most improved boxer in the tournament. All in all, the championship provided some hope for the future of the sport as most of the participants appeared fit and well prepared for combat.
The results of the finals are: Jamal Eastman (PRBG) out-pointed Shaka Moore (Essq0; Dewani Lampkin (FYF) was too good for Kevin Thorne; Joel Williamson (PRBG) prevailed over Troy Armstrong (FYF). In the junior/flyweight division of the elite category, Troy Billey (BB won from Moolchand Sankar RW) shortly before flyweight, Imran Khan (HE) defeated Richard Williamson (PRBG). Stephon Gouveia (HE) retained his dominance over Nankumar Singh (Rep) with a lopsided 3-0 verdict while policeman, Ray Sandiford won from Romano Clarke (GDF) by a 2-1 verdict to take the jnr/welterweight title. Markember Pierre (GDF) won by default after policeman Jermain Dow failed to attend the weigh in earlier in the day while Republican, Trelon Munroe needed just 48 seconds to poleaxe Samuel primo (GDF) and capture the heavyweight crown.
