“To add to our illustrious line of sons and daughters who all time, gave their best that you may
shine for Buxton my own native land” reads the last verse of the Buxton battle song. This was pertinent to the event that took place in the Buxton community yesterday.
Yesterday afternoon, the community hosted a liberation and turning of sod ceremony in honour of the coming restoration of the Tipperary Hall.
The event was graced with the presence of a number of Government officials including President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Tipperary Hall which was a landmark at Buxton was ruined during 1998. This building was primarily used by the residents for social and culture events.
Tipperary Hall was built in 1909. The building was made of timber. In 1911 it was registered as a burial society.
The initial use of the building was expanded to include social, cultural and educational activities for the people of Buxton, Friendship and its environs. The building was inaugurated by the chairman and councilors of Buxton and Friendship local authority.
The Government of Guyana is giving $50 million towards the restoration of the Tipperary Hall. Buxtonians expressed gratitude to the Government for its doing as it relates to the Tipperary restoration process.
According to Rollo Young, in 1950, when the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) was formed, meetings were held at the Hall.
Young said that the restoration of the Tipperary Hall should have been addressed a long time ago. He added that some persons in the village were very upset that the restoration committee involved the Government.
However, he said that those are the persons who don’t want to see growth in the community. He added that, the Government’s restoration of the Hall is not a privilege for Buxtonians but a fundamental right.
The Buxton\Friendship steelband played the popular folk song “Brown skin gal” to showcase Buxton’s talent and culture.
Mboya Wood, who played an integral part in the process, said that he is pleased to be a part of restoring a landmark that is so important to Buxtonians.
Odinga Lumumba, Presidential Adviser, in his remarks, reminded his fellow Buxtonians of the days when racism was not a factor, and it should not be one now. He encouraged the villagers to keep peace in the community which is the first step to restoration.
President Bharrat Jagdeo who turned the sod to signal the restoration, said that he is honoured to contribute to the restoration of the Tipperary Hall. He said that he will continue, in his time remaining, to contribute to the further development of Buxton.
The President said that, when he was elected he was not elected as the PPP’s President, but as Guyana’s President and when he refers to his people he means the people of Guyana.
