Once again tragedy in one of Guyana’s rivers has claimed another life.
This time a Brazilian, Rodrigues Dantos, a miner, is dead because the boat in which he was traveling, crashed after it hit a floating log some 200 meters from the Parika Stelling.
The boat was heading to Bartica with about 20 passengers when the mishap occurred around 17:50 hours yesterday.
According to reports, the captain of the boat missed the normal channel as a result of the spring tide and crashed into the log which was submerged.
Kaieteur News understands that after hitting the log, all of the passengers were hurled into the water when the boat capsised.
Except for Dantos, all the passengers managed to swim ashore or were rescued by other vessels in the immediate vicinity.
Dantos’s lifeless body was discovered when the boat was eventually righted.
According to a source, the Brazilian was seated at the back of the vessel.
“He was found at the back by the stern,” the source told this newspaper.
His body is now lying at a funeral parlour awaiting a post mortem examination.
Eyewitnesses said that at the time when the boat departed from Parika, visibility was very poor.
This newspaper understands that around this time of the year, boats traveling to Bartica should leave Parika no later than 17:00 hours.
“This boat had to leave after five and they would’a reach Bartica in total darkness. So it was a real risk,” said the source.
He opined that since the boat was fitted with a 200 horse power engine it was traveling at a terrific speed when the mishap occurred.
This newspaper was unable to ascertain if the captain of the boat is in police custody to assist with investigations into this latest river tragedy.
