Another silver for Roberts and bronze for Simmons
Jessica Stephenson continued her gold rush with a clean sweep of all the breast strokes events ending with victory in the 100m breast in a Carifta A time of 1:17.13 that saw her almost 7 seconds faster than her peers in the 13-14 age and over 4 seconds faster than the 15 and over girls. This feat was achieved on the final day of the Marlins Invitation Meet in Trinidad and Tobago which ended on Sunday. The T&T based Stephenson continued to show what dedication, committed work and adequate pool time can help you achieve.
Her fellow Guyanese peers who are not as fortunate when it comes to pool time did try their utmost to compete to the best of their ability.
Athena Gaskin swam the same event as Stephenson to finish 10th, her brother Hannibal in the boys 11-12 again achieved a PB in the 100 breast of 1:28.29 and Jaime Jabar placed 6th in the 15 and over category.
Niall Roberts achieved a PB of 24.75 in the boys 15 and over 50m free but was pipped to the gold by Trinidad’s Strasser Sankar in an exciting and very close race that also saw Jabar swam a new PB of 27.00 for 14th place.
Racing earlier in the same event Hannibal Gaskin in the 11-12 came 15th whilst in the 13-14 girls Athena Gaskin and Jessica both achieved PBs to place 9th (30.59) and 13th (31.07) respectively whilst Soroya Simmons completed the Guyanese swimming in the event to end 18th.
Completing a great end to the Meet for Guyana – Simmons won her first medal of the championship by taking the bronze in the 100m back with a 1:17.67.
Athena Gaskin was the sole 200m IM swimmer achieving 9th place. Hannibal Gaskin swam to 16th in the 100m back behind Trinidad’s Jabari Baptise who set a new Trinidad record.
With over 350 swimmers from the region and Sweden competing, the Marlins Invitational Meet is undoubtedly the best individual and Club Meet in the region and Guyana’s swimmers definitely made their presence felt.
It is hoped that the Meet next year will attract even greater interest from Guyana and the region.
