Dear Editor,
According to the findings of an opinion survey conducted by NACTA recently in Trinidad, voters are losing confidence in the ruling Peoples Partnership government’s ability to bring down crime.
Although people have confidence in the Prime Minister, they are not pleased with the government’s handling of crime, CLICO, the economy, and Caribbean Airlines (CAL). The business community expresses a lack of confidence in the economy, saying the business environment is the worst they have seen in many years.
And consumers also complain they don’t have enough money to spend with holiday shopping the slowest in years. They also complain about the slow pace in the appointment of state boards.
The findings of the poll are obtained from interviews with 402 respondents (45% Indians, 37% Africans, 17% Mixed, and 1% others) reflecting the demographic composition of the population. The poll conducted by NACTA has a 5% margin of error.
Asked if they agree with how the Caribbean Airlines controversy is being handled, 34% said yes with 31% saying no and 35% saying they are not sure with many asking for more information about the controversy at CAL. Some people say CAL has unnecessarily become a public spectacle urging that it be resolved quickly to prevent a fallout on the reputation of the airline and on tourism.
Asked if they support the planned lawsuit by CLICO policyholders, 35% said “Yes” with 46% saying no and 19% not sure. Many respondents feel that lack of payment to CLICO policyholders will hurt the economy as many won’t have money to spend that will redound to the benefit of the economy.
Asked if they think the protective services are getting a handle on crime, only an insignificant 9% said yes with 79% saying no and 12% saying not sure. Almost every voter complained that crime has gotten out of control and want the government to take drastic actions to reduce crime. They endorse Kamla’s tough attitude demanding solutions from the protective heads in bringing down the crime rate.
Asked if an election were to be held now, which party they think will win, 59% said the Peoples Partnership with 18% saying the PNM and 23% saying they are not sure. Voters do not view the currently constituted PNM as an alternative government in waiting and they continue to repose faith in Kamla’s leadership.
