– staff in custody
At least five employees of the Princess Hotel at Providence, East Bank Demerara, are assisting police investigators who are probing the theft of US$7000 from the casino.
The theft was unearthed around midday on Friday when a man, who is said to be a relative of one of the employees, attempted to cash seven black chips worth US$1000 each, which were illegally obtained from the casino. Kaieteur News understands that when the man tried to cash the chips, authorities became suspicious, since the casino had not commenced operations for the day.
When questioned, the man revealed that he was given the chips by one of the Table Dealers of the casino, who happens to be his relative. The dealer was subsequently questioned and he in turn revealed the names of two other Table Dealers and two pit bosses.
It is believed that the racket had gone undetected for some time now but was only unearthed because of a miscalculation on the part of the perpetrators.
“All the time they were tiefing but they get catch yesterday (Friday),” a staff at the casino told this newspaper.
The hotel authorities remained tightlipped but this newspaper understands that among those assisting the police in their investigations are two women.
