Jessica Stephenson cops Guyana’s 1st gold; Niall Roberts claims silver

Guyana’s Jessica Stephenson earned her second medal of the Marlins Invitational Swim Meet in Trinidad and Tobago with a gold medal on Friday in the 200m breast stroke – swimming a 2:46.88 – Jessica rushed down the pool in a very convincing 18 seconds ahead of the silver medallist, Sangeeta Maharaj of Stingrays and securing the only Carifta A time of the event.
Fellow Guyanese Athena Gaskin finished 7th in the same event with a 3:23.02 but her brother Hannibal Gaskin took 10 seconds off his personal best in the boys 11-12 200m breast stroke to finish a creditable 8th.
Guyana’s other medallist was Niall Roberts who finished with a  silver medal in the 15 and over 50m butterfly with a  silver medal in the 50m butterfly with a new personal best of 26.71.
Noelle Smith in the girls event finished 11th in 32.82, whilst the girls 13-14 saw the local pair of  Athena Gaskin touching home in 35.69 to claim 14th position and Soroya Simmons in 38.06 finishing 21st.
Hannibal Gaskin swimming the same race for the boys 11-12 managed a new personal best of 34.70 to secure 17th place.
The Meet started with all Guyana’s swimmers in the 100m free with Hannibal Gaskin first in the pool to finish with a Personal best of 1:09.53 (knocking almost 4 seconds off his previous time), the girls in the 13-14 category were in the pool next and Athena Gaskin touched in 10th, Jessica Stephenson in 13th and Soroya Simmons 17th, the older Noelle Smith in the 15 and over placed 6th as did her compatriot Niall Roberts who managed another personal best.
