Guyana’s highways: A Myth

Dear Editor,
This commentary is not designed to belittle the efforts of our government to improve Guyana’s roads. It is designed to inform all that the misuse of terminology can lead, in some instances, to unpleasant situations.
Take for instance, highways. The term, highway, is self-descriptive. It is a high way! It is a road that is elevated to a height which makes it necessary to acquire ramps, with which to access, or exit, these roads. These elevator roads are constructed to facilitate faster moving motorized traffic, and to reduce accidents involving pedestrians, or non-motorized or slower traffic.
To classify Guyana’s roads as highways, inadvertently sends a message to drivers that it is okay to travel fast, to speed. It is this speeding which is causing far too many of the road accidents today.
