Sewnarine Chattergoon will replace his injured Albion teammate Narsingh Deonarine in the Guyana team which will play three practice matches in the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) four-team T20 cricket Festival from December 28-30 and the 2011 Caribbean Cup which commences on January in Antigua.
The 27-year-old Deonarine who has played 8 Tests and 20 ODIs for the West Indies is suffering from a shoulder injury which has prevented him from practicing.
Guyana, who won this year’s inaugural Caribbean Cup Final against Barbados to qualify to represent the West Indies in the 2010 Airtel Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa and the South Americans face Jamaica in their opening match from 20:00hrs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on January 10.
The 29-year-old Chattergoon, who has played 4 Tests and 18 ODIs for the West Indies, has struggled to get the ball away in his ten T20 matches for Guyana and his selection ahead of talented West Indies under-19 opener Rajendra Chandrika, the attacking Shemroy Barrington or former West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson, is a surprise.
With the experienced Shiv Chanderpaul not ideally suited to T20 cricket and Travis Dowlin who faced a high percentage of dot ball in South Africa when he and Chattergoon failed to give Guyana any good starts, the Guyanese could be hard pressed to score quickly inside the for six ‘power play’ overs as they hope to retain their title and participate in next Year’s Champions League tournament in India.
Chattergoon averages under 18 and is yet to score a T20 fifty and has a strike rate of less than a run-a-ball and both he and Dowlin were dropped from Guyana’s team for this year’s Regional 50-over tournament in Jamaica after their poor run in South Africa.
The Guyanese who won the first regional T20 tournament in the West Indies in Antigua 2006 before losing to Jamaica in the semi-final of the Regional next T20 competition in 2008 and taking championship honours this year in Trinidad, will travel to Trinidad on December 27 for three practice matches before retuning home on December 31.
The Guyana squad read: Ramnaresh Sarwan (Captain), Shiv Chanderpaul, Richard Ramdeen, Travis Dowlin, Steven Jacobs, Royston Crandon, Jonathon Foo, Derwin Christian, Esuan Crandon, Veerasammy Permaul, Davindra Bishoo, Chris Barnwell, Andre Stoll, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Ravindra Seeram (Coach), Carl Moore (Manager).
