Chairman of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Oswald Ellis, has said that at no time have members of his committee instructed residents to solicit funds from motorists who use the ‘B’ Field Bridge.
Ellis asserted that those residents who have been carrying out the illegal act were warned several time to cease collecting money from drivers. What they have been doing, exclaimed Ellis, is for their personal gain.
“Some of these persons who are doing this are not even from Sophia.”
The disturbed man added that when repair works are needed, he and other members of the committee solicit donation in any form from residents.
In a recent publication several residents of Sophia stated that drivers of motor vehicles are being charged an optional fee to cross the ‘B’ Field bridge that links Sophia to Guyhoc and its environs.
One woman alleged that maintaining the structure is very costly and as a result residents moved to implement fees to drivers.
She said that recently the bridge had become dilapidated and it cost residents approximately $60,000 to finance repair works. Ellis said that this is highly irregular and untrue.
Several drivers who spoke to this newspaper said that they have no objections to paying a small fee but are dissatisfied with the condition of the bridge.
They are anxiously awaiting the intervention of officials from the relevant Ministry.
