A special ceremony to mark the installation of several Anglican priests to the Archdeaconry was held recently in Georgetown.
Rev. Oscar Basil, Randolph Reynolds, Joseph Wagner and Berbician, Fr George Spencer, were all installed as Archdeacons, while Revs Winston Williams, Evan Semple, Alfred David and Marcus Simon were installed as Canons of the Anglican Diocese of Guyana.
The service was attended by hundreds of Anglicans and officials from the diocese. Anglican Bishop of Guyana, Right Rev. Cornell Jerome Moss, presided over the various rites of installation during the service.
In an interview with the Venerable George Spencer, Archdeacon of St Bridget’s, the office of Archdeacon is specifically created to be the eyes and ears of the Bishop. It is an office that assists the Bishop in performing his duties.
The Bishop, he said, after carrying out discussions with key players in the church as well as members of the various parish churches, decided to give the titles to the aforementioned persons.
A canon, he explained, is an honorific title given to a parish priest for outstanding work.
On the matter of women priests—which has been at the centre of the Anglican Church especially in the USA—the archdeacon said that Guyana is one of the only dioceses where this has not yet been approved.
He did not rule out women being allowed to serve in the Anglican priesthood in the future. He noted that there is a great shortage of Anglican priests in Guyana and there are quite a number of churches spread across the length and breadth of Guyana.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds represented the government at the ceremony at the St George’s Cathedral. A cocktail reception was held after the service at the Bank of Guyana roof garden.
