The year 2010, a challenging one the world over, was a very productive and successful one for the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) located at Rose Hall in the Ancient County of Berbice.
Proudly uttering these words of success was the Club’s long serving Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster. A total of 107 programmes and projects were achieved while the club maintained its reputation as one of Guyana’s leading cricket club’s with strong performances on the cricket field.

Foster also noted that the club was able to attract a new cricket team sponsored by Gizmos & Gadgets to add to the existing list of Bakewell, Farfan & Mendes, DDL Pepsi and Metro Office Supplies.
The club also successfully hosted the 7th Edition of the Guyana Beverage Company’s sponsored Busta Champion of Champions and the 14th Annual Cricket Academy in July/August which attracted 120 young players between the ages of 8 to 18. The 19th Annual Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Awards Ceremony was held in March with over $2.5M worth of prizes, trophies and medals shared out to club members.
Twelve young cricketers also benefitted from cricket gear under the club’s 2nd Annual Basil Butcher Berbice Cricket Development Trust Fund at the cost of $300,000. Four young Berbice players also received $250,000 worth of gear under the 2nd Annual Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club/Western Union Junior Ambassador Programme.

In addition the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club assisted 160 students to stay in school, shared out over $5M in Educational and Hygiene materials to thousands of students and assisted over 40 schools with over $1M in trophies and prizes for graduation ceremonies and sporting events.
With a strong emphasis on making a positive difference in the lives of youths and the less fortunate the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Charity Programme in 2010 was also
described as highly successful with the distribution of $8M worth of clothing, footwear and food items to less fortunate families.
Cricket Clubs in Berbice received $800,000 worth of cricket balls, $1.2M in sports gear were shared out to NGOs, schools and government agencies and $300,000 in trophies to other sports clubs.
The Club also assisted ten families whose homes were destroyed by fire, fifteen senior citizens with medical expenses while 37 single parents also received financial and material assistance. Under its Community Outreach Campaign, the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club donated cash to fourteen community based NGOs for projects, held the 3rd Annual Children Mash Parade on Mash Day with over 500 school children, hosted Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day Luncheons for a combined 150 parents and hosted the Milton Armogan Memorial Tribute to Heroes Programme where eight senior citizens were honored for their contributions to Guyana.
The Club during the month of September celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a total of twenty-five specific activities organised to mark this historic achievement.
The activities included a Religious Service, Unveiling of the All Time Cricket XI, and Medical Outreach Programme with the Guyana Defence Force and the Launching of the Club’s 20th Anniversary Magazine.
The Club also assisted with the development of Berbice cricket by using its positive influence to raise over $4M for the BCB in sponsorship and also produced the Board’s 2010 Magazine.
Over half a million dollars in trophies, medals and prizes was given to the Board which allowed them to host several programmes organised by the Special Events Committee.
One of the most special moments for the club came in March 2010 when two of its members received national sports awards at the National Cultural Centre. Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster received the 2009 National Sports Personality Award while Shemaine Campbelle was named Runner-up Junior Sportswoman of the Year.
The success of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club in 2010, according to Foster was due to inspirational and visionary leadership from management, hard work, faith in God, unity among the clubs 300 strong membership and the support of the club’s numerous sponsors.
Foster disclosed that the Club sets very high standards and work assiduously towards maintaining those standards.
One of the problems facing the club was an aging leadership with most of them being around for the twenty years the club has been in existence. As such, the club has selected twelve potential young leaders – six males and six females who will be trained to become leaders of the organisation from as early as next year.
The group named ‘Leaders of the next Generation’ includes Shawn Perreira, Lloydel Lewis, Shemaine Campbelle, Nermala Sewdat, Lenny Sanichar and Erva Giddings.
The aim is to have them elected as executives and to prepare them to take over the leadership of Guyana’s leading youth and sports club. With all of the leaders of the next generation below the age of twenty years, the club is confident of its future.
Plans have already started for 2011 with a total of 120 programmes being planned including several new ones that would target youths and the less fortunate.
The Club would like to express gratitude to all its supporters, families of all its members, the media and all its sponsors for their support in 2010 and looks forward for the same co-operation in 2011.
